Own or want a Boat? Where to Launch, Dock, and Buy a Lake House Near the Western Suburbs

June 21, 20268 min read

Dreaming about summers on the water? Whether you want to paddle a kayak after work, keep a powerboat at a marina, or own a home where you dock a boat in the backyard, you have more options than you might think near the western suburbs. Here is the full picture, sorted by how far you have to drive. The short version is this. Close to home, rivers like the DuPage in downtown Naperville and the Fox out west are made for paddling. But a short drive south puts you on real powerboating water, the Illinois River.

Right Here: Paddle Close to Home

You do not have to leave town to get on the water. Right in the heart of downtown Naperville, the DuPage River runs along the famous Riverwalk, and you can paddle it. The Naperville Park District runs the Paddleboat Quarry along the Riverwalk, where you can rent a kayak, paddleboard, or paddleboat from spring through fall. You can also rent kayaks to paddle the DuPage River itself through Naperville Kayak. It is one of the easiest ways to spend a summer evening here.

Just to the west, the Fox River runs through Oswego, Aurora, and Yorkville, and it is part of the Fabulous Fox Water Trail, a designated National Water Trail. This stretch is best for kayaks and canoes, not powerboats, because about a dozen low dams break up the river. You can put in at spots like Hudson Crossing Park in Oswego, Saw Wee Kee Park, Violet Patch Park, and Veterans Memorial Island Park in Aurora. Up north there are launches at the Geneva Boat Launch, Fabyan Forest Preserve, and Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles. In Yorkville, the Marge Cline Whitewater Course lets paddlers ride a fun chute around the dam. You can see every access point at the Fabulous Fox Water Trail site.

Real Powerboating Close By: The Illinois River

Here is the part a lot of people miss. A short drive south, roughly 30 to 60 minutes, the Illinois River opens up, and this is true powerboating and cruising water. River towns like Channahon, Morris, Seneca, Marseilles, and Ottawa all sit right on it, with marinas, boat ramps, yacht clubs, riverfront bars and restaurants, and homes where you can dock a boat in your own backyard. The river is usually calmer and far less crowded than the big lakes, and it connects all the way to the Mississippi River and up to Lake Michigan. From a slip down here, you could literally cruise to the Gulf of Mexico.

A few standouts. In Seneca, Mariners' Village and Marina is a private community of custom homes built around a harbor with direct river access, and the town is also home to the Seneca Yacht Club. In Ottawa, Heritage Harbor is a marina resort community with riverfront homes, a full marina, and a waterfront restaurant. Near Starved Rock there is the Starved Rock Marina and Yacht Club, and Morris has a public boat launch at William G. Stratton State Park, a popular spot for water skiing.

This one is personal for us. Julia owns a home right on the Illinois River, so when we tell you it is one of the best kept boating secrets around, that comes from living it.

The River Even Farther East: The Kankakee

The Illinois River is fed by the Kankakee River just to the east, near Channahon, and the Kankakee has its own lively boating scene. Around Wilmington and Kankakee you will find marinas like Island View Marina, the Kankakee Valley Boat Club, riverfront bars and restaurants, and plenty of homes right on the water. For paddlers and anglers, Kankakee River State Park protects 11 miles of river just northwest of Kankakee. If you want a boat and a place to keep it without driving hours, this whole river corridor south of us is the answer.

Closest of All: A Private Lake in Plainfield

You do not even have to leave Plainfield for lake living. The Lakelands is a private community in northeast Plainfield, off Naperville Plainfield Road, built around its own 140 acre lake with about four miles of shoreline. Residents enjoy boating, fishing, and swimming right from their backyards, with kayaks, paddleboards, and pontoon boats. Lakes like this are usually quiet, no wake or electric motor lakes, so it is calm, family friendly boating without the crowds or the drive. If having a boat at home appeals to you, this is the closest option of all. You can learn more at the Lakelands community site, and we can tell you which homes sit right on the water and what the lake rules allow.

A Bigger Lake With a Powerboat: Lake Holiday

For a bigger lake where you can run a true powerboat, the closest option is Lake Holiday. It is a private community built around a 328 acre lake between Sandwich and Somonauk, about an hour southwest. More than 1,750 families live there, and the lake is made for boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing. There are two boat launches and a full service private marina, so you can keep your boat right where you live. Homes range from inland ranches to waterfront, and prices tend to be friendlier than you would expect for lake living. Learn more at the Lake Holiday community site.

Drive Farther for the Big Lakes

If you are willing to drive about an hour or more north, a few famous spots open up.

The Chain O'Lakes near Fox Lake and Antioch is 15 connected lakes covering roughly 7,000 acres, and it is the busiest inland boating waterway in the state. It is packed with marinas, launches, lakefront restaurants, and lake homes, with a public launch at Chain O'Lakes State Park. You can find launch details through the Lake County visitor guide.

Up in southern Wisconsin, about an hour and a half north, two beautiful lakes sit side by side. Lake Geneva covers 5,401 acres of clear, deep water, with public launches in Lake Geneva, Williams Bay, Fontana, and the Town of Linn, and it is a higher end lake home market. See more at Visit Lake Geneva. Just about 10 miles northwest sits Lake Delavan, a 1,906 acre lake known for boating and water skiing, with public launches and homes all along the shore. This one is personal too. Vickie owns a home on Lake Delavan, so she knows the southern Wisconsin lake scene firsthand and can tell you the real differences between these lakes.

The Great Lake: Lake Michigan

For the biggest water of all, you can keep a boat on Lake Michigan. The Chicago Harbors make up the nation's largest city harbor system, with 10 harbors and room for more than 6,000 boats, about an hour east. Farther north, North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor is the largest marina on the Great Lakes, with about 1,500 slips, sitting right next to Illinois Beach State Park.

Where to Keep Your Boat

You have choices here too. You can rent a slip or dry storage at a marina, from the Illinois River towns to Lake Holiday to Chicago. Or you can store a trailer at home, but check your HOA rules first, because some neighborhoods limit boats and trailers in driveways. This is the kind of detail that trips people up, and it is exactly what we check for you before you buy.
