Illinois Moving Checklist: An 8-Week Homebuyer Countdown
Quick answer: Start your move about 8 weeks before closing. Gather your paperwork, set a budget, book movers, and plan your utilities and insurance. In the last week, confirm closing details and do a final walkthrough. After you move, change your address with the Illinois Secretary of State, the post office and your voter registration. This checklist works for buyers and sellers. This post was last updated in October 2026.
Moving is a lot of small jobs that all land at once. If you are buying or selling in Naperville, Illinois or the western suburbs, a plan keeps you calm. Here is a countdown we share with our clients.
8 Weeks Before
- Set your date. Know your closing day and your move out or move in day. They may not be the same.
- Make a budget. Include movers, boxes, cleaning, storage and a small cushion for surprises.
- Start sorting. Go room by room. Keep, give away, donate or sell.
- Get moving quotes. Book early. Fridays and the end of the month fill up fast.
- Sellers: talk to us about the timing of your sale and your next home. See our post on selling before you buy if both are happening at once.
- Buyers: review your closing costs. Our guide to closing costs in Illinois covers what to budget for.

6 Weeks Before
- Home insurance (buyers). Line up your policy so it starts by closing. Insurance costs have been climbing, so read Illinois Home Insurance Rising.
- Order supplies. Boxes, tape, markers and packing paper.
- Pack what you will not need. Off season clothes, books, decor.
- Check school and medical records. If you are changing districts, contact your new district for what they need. We can point you to the district websites.
- Make a folder for moving papers, receipts and contact numbers.
4 Weeks Before
- Schedule utilities. Set stop and start dates for electricity, gas, water, trash, internet and cable. Ask the village or city if water and trash are billed separately.
- Update subscriptions and deliveries.
- Sellers: schedule any repairs from your inspection and ask your agent what the buyer is expecting.
- Buyers: keep your finances steady. Do not open new credit or change jobs. Your lender is still checking.
- Plan for pets and kids on moving day.
2 Weeks Before
- Change your mailing address with the U.S. Postal Service.
- Notify banks, credit cards, your employer and insurance companies.
- Confirm your movers in writing.
- Pack a "first night" box with sheets, towels, toiletries, chargers, medicine and snacks.
- Property taxes. Illinois taxes are paid a year behind, so your closing may include a credit or a charge. Our post on Illinois property taxes paid in arrears explains why.
1 Week Before
- Confirm your closing time and place. Ask what to bring. Plan for a photo ID and any funds your title company needs.
- Do the final walkthrough (buyers). Check that the seller made the agreed repairs and left what they promised. Use our final walkthrough checklist.
- Understand closing day. Read What Happens at Closing on a House in Illinois.
- Clean the home (sellers). Leave it broom clean, with all keys, garage openers and manuals.
- Take photos of meter readings the day you move.
Moving Day
- Keep important items with you, like documents, medicine, jewelry and chargers.
- Do a last walk through the old home. Check closets, cabinets, the garage and the attic.
- Get keys and codes, and change the locks at your new home.
- Take photos of anything damaged during the move.
The First Two Weeks After
- Change your driver's license or ID address with the Illinois Secretary of State. Check their site for the current rules and deadline.
- Update your voter registration through the Illinois State Board of Elections.
- Update your vehicle registration and insurance.
- Locate the shut off valves, the breaker panel and the furnace filter size.
- Meet your neighbors, and check the village or city website for trash and recycling days.
